Meet Clayton Beeter, the pitcher the Yankees got in the trade from Joey Gallo

The Yankees traded Joey Gallo to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday before the MLB trade deadline in exchange for pitcher Clayton Beeter, who the Bombers surely hope will have a better tenure in the Bronx than the struggling outfielder.

The right-hander Beeter is currently ranked No. 15 among Dodgers prospects, according to MLB.com, and was considered a steal when Los Angeles selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft. The now elderly Texas Tech product 23, was considered one of the most dominant starters heading into day one of the draft, but fell to the board amid a slew of injuries he suffered in college.

Prior to the start of his first season with the Red Raiders in December 2017, Beeter underwent Tommy John surgery and underwent elbow arthroscopy seven months later. However, he bounced back well as a redshirt sophomore, helping lead Texas Tech to the 2019 College World Series semifinals with eight saves and four good starts.

The Dodgers rewarded his impressive play with a $1,196,500 contract but retained the right to a strict innings in his first season with the club. In his 2021 freshman season, he pitched just 52 ⅓ innings in 28 games, 27 of which were starts.

Beeter’s best weapon is his fastball, which tends to hover around 93-96 mph but, at times, can max out at 98 mph. His curveball, which sits in the low 80 mph range, often smothers hitters with his high spin rate.

Of the 18 games pitched with Double-A Tulsa this season — 16 of which were starts — Beeter is 0-3 with a 5.75 ERA and 88 strikeouts.
