Montserrat Hernandez-Garcia is Program Manager, SJCARES Registry for the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine. Montserrat is a pediatric oncologist specializing in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). She earned her MD and completed her residency and fellowships at the Instituto Nacional de Pediatria, Mexico. After that, Montserrat trained at Boston Children’s Hospital/Dana Farber Cancer Institute with a focus on improving pediatric oncology and the quality of HSCT care in her home country of Mexico, where she was one of the founders of the Hospital Infantil Teleton de Oncologia (HITO). . Monteserrat has worked actively with multidisciplinary teams and national and international partners to facilitate complex oncology patient care, including rapid access to target therapy and international donor registries.

His work through the implementation of pediatric oncology clinical protocols and point-of-care HSCT in an LMIC setting has given him insight into the need for access to high-quality research to improve patient outcomes. patients and strengthen hospitals. She was also chair of the ethics committee in Mexico and participated in collaborative research studies to improve the quality of local care in pediatric oncology / HSCT, from diagnostic tools and risk stratification (such as the setting implementation and validation of minimal residual disease by flow cytometry in pediatric acute leukaemias) to innovative therapeutic approaches such as haploidentical transplants in PRITIs.

Montserrat knows that improving access to quality research with quality data in an ethical and collaborative environment is key to accelerating science and improving outcomes in pediatric oncology around the world, especially in LMICs where the childhood cancer burden is high and where access to new therapies through clinical trials is needed. .

“Ensuring that children have access to quality care and treatment, wherever they live” is a phrase that has special meaning for her.
