UCSC mentoring concept

The UCSC SAB Staff Mentorship Program is a volunteer program that pairs experienced UCSC staff from all units on campus with newer staff looking to grow professionally. The program provides a support structure in which participants can cultivate contacts, explore challenges, and improve their effectiveness while shaping their personal growth and career path.

Once pairs are established, mentors and mentees will define the form and scope of their personal experience. Some pairs may choose more reading suggestions, for example, while others may choose to rely exclusively on dialogue. The mentoring relationship will officially last for one calendar year.

Program cycles

The staff mentoring program cycle lasts 12 months. The next program cycle will span the calendar year from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022.

Who can participate

The program includes UCSC employees whose policy is governed by Professional and Support Staff (PSS) and Senior Managers and Professionals (MSP).

Mentors are experienced career UCSC employees and highly respected advisers, coaches and colleagues who guide and challenge, and who are ready to share their experiences.

Mentees are career UCSC employees interested in career development who have relatively fewer years of service.

Eligibility requirements for 2022 program participants include:

  • Staff not represented in exempt and non-exempt payroll vouchers (hourly reporting time) governed by policies for Professionals and Support Staff (PSS) or Managers and Senior Professionals (MSP)

  • Supervisor approval

  • Non-probationary career or partial year career status at the start of the mentee program with a current performance rating of satisfactory (or better)

Before applying, potential mentees should:

  • Obtain supervisor approval

  • Confirm their job classification with their personnel human resources operations specialist. A directory is available HERE,

How the program works

  • Mentees accepted for the program will be notified shortly after the application deadline. Supervisor approval will be required to participate in the program.

  • Mentees accepted for the program will receive a list of 3 potential mentors; mentees should organize brief meetings (in person, virtual or over the phone) with potential mentors. After the meeting, mentees and mentors will separately submit their match preferences in order of ranking to the UCSC Staff Advisory Council Mentoring Committee. The committee will complete the matchmaking process.

  • Once the match is complete, the pairs will be notified and the mentoring process will begin on January 1, 2022.

  • The UCSC Staff Advisory Council will sponsor a networking event to kick off the cycle of the mentoring program, during which mentors and mentees can meet in an informal setting. Mentees and mentors will receive the date, time and location of this “kick off reception” by email. (Place to be determined)

  • Once matched, the mentor and mentee establish mutually acceptable terms for the mentoring relationship. Mentors and mentees meet on a schedule set for a calendar / fiscal year.
